Governance

Sandpoint Waldorf School, like all other Waldorf schools, is independent and self-administering. It is a nonprofit corporation.

The Faculty is composed of the Pedagogical Director, full time teachers, and part time subject teachers. The Faculty meets weekly to discuss curriculum, to engage in artistic activities, child studies, pedagogical and anthroposophical study, and to address general business and the day-to-day running of the school. Decision-making is done through consensus with the well being of the children as its foremost concern. Professional development and review is pursued throughout the year in the form of mentoring, workshops, and conferences.

The Administration is composed of the Director of Operations & Business, Pedagogical Director, Enrollment Coordinator and Office Coordinator. The Administration manages and develops resources in service to the school by implementing policies and plans, managing human resources and facilitating daily school operations. The Admin team support the self-governance of the faculty.

The Board of Trustees is composed of parents, faculty, and interested community members and is responsible for the legal and financial matters of the school. The Board meets monthly to hear reports from the Pedagogical Director, Director of Operations & Business, Director of Infrastructure, faculty, Parent Circle, and committee chairs and to guide and direct the business aspects of the school including site development, the annual budget, tuition assistance policies, and fundraising. It also mandates certain committee functions in order to meet both day-to-day and long-term needs of the school.

Individuals interested in becoming a Trustee can express interest at any time to a Board Trustee. Prospective Trustees are individuals who demonstrate engagement and commitment to the long term health of the school through involvement in committee work, the Parent Circle, attending Board Meetings, or participating actively in other facets of the school.

Interested individuals are invited to meet with the Board Development Committee, attend a minimum of three board meetings, and inform themselves of SWS governance through selected reading. Nominations of prospective Board members are submitted at Board meetings and affirmed by a vote. The initial term is three years.

The Board Development Committee is always open to considering nominations from community members. Nominees can and are encouraged to express interest in joining the board at any time. While the BOT may not have a current opening, strategizing to seek and nominate qualified members to join the BOT when terms expire supports the Board’s intention of continual development in meeting the changing needs of SWS.

The Parent Body is composed of all parents and guardians of enrolled students. Parents are valuable participants in the long range direction and day-to-day running of the school by their involvement in the Parent Circle, committee work, and by helping at festivals and working with the teachers. Parents are considered to be part of the life-blood of the school and are asked to involve themselves in a capacity best suited to their individual skills, talents, and abilities. A Waldorf education includes the entire family, and parents play a critical role. Learn more about Parent Circle…
